On 26 May 2021, the Swiss medtech industry lost its barrier-free access to the European market because the EU refused to update the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) for political reasons. Since then, Switzerland has been considered a ‘third country’ by the EU. This situation poses significant challenges to the Swiss medtech industry, which must find new ways to ensure the sustainable supply of medical devices to the Swiss population and to maintain its international competitiveness and innovative strength in the global medical market. Switzerland will need to partner with other countries outside the EU to manage these challenges, which opens new opportunities to market participants abroad. This article illustrates what ideas and possible means are being discussed presently to successfully overcome the existing hurdles.
